Frequently Asked Questions about Our Classes
Can I attend the classes if I've never meditated before and am a complete beginner?
YES. The classes are introductory and suitable for beginners. People with more experience with meditation can also take these classes and receive benefit.
I'm not a Buddhist. May I still participate in your classes and activities?
You don't have to be a Buddhist to participate. Most of us who are now members of the Buddhist Center came with some type of spiritual background. We began to notice that the meditation practices helped us solve our daily problems and resulted in a greater measure of inner peace. We have classes for varying degrees of commitment and participation. Do what's right for you and we will all do our best to be of benefit to you, whether or not you are a Buddhist.
What if I'm new to any kind of organized religion?
Buddhist teachings are inclusive and tolerant, and emphasize applied philosophy, practical psychology, and an ethical way of life. We invite you to ask questions and to bring your own experience and intellectual capacity to any teaching. Having an open, questioning mind is a good foundation for making progress in Buddhist meditation. Although ritual is part of our more advanced program classes, its purpose is to develop states of mind which enhance our spiritual progress.
How should I dress for class?
Dress comfortably. Most people wear comfortable pants or other casual attire.
Do I have to wait for the next series of classes to begin?
NO. Each General Program meditation class is self-contained. You can attend any individual classes or the whole series. Attending the entire series of classes is helpful because each class builds on the next. However, even if you attend only one class, you will derive meaning from it. Any time one meditates, one receives benefit.
What classes are available and where should I start?
Our General Program meditation classes (check our monthly calendars) are open to everyone. There is a talk, guided meditation, and time for questions. In these classes, you will learn breathing meditation and other forms of practical meditation that you can do at home throughout the week. We also have a more advanced Foundation Program class that is based on the systematic study of various Buddhist texts and which includes prayers, meditation, and time for discussion. We also offer day courses, retreats, and Pujas, which are guided meditations in song. You are welcome to attend any of these programs.
How much do the classes cost?
Classes are $8 per class. Monthly donation plans are also available. The Center is a tax-exempt, 501(c)3 organization, and all proceeds go towards making these teachings available throughout the area.
Do I need to pre-register for the General Program classes?
No, you don't need to pre-register.
Do I need to pre-register for day courses and empowerments?
We ask that everyone register in advance for day courses or empowerments to aid in event planning. However, you can still attend these events, even without pre-registration.
What is the difference between General Program Classes, Day Courses, and Foundation Program Classes?
General Program Classes contain teachings for everyone about various aspects of Buddhism. For the more committed student, we offer the Foundation Program (FP) and an even more advanced class, the Teacher Training Program (TTP). We also offer classes for those with Highest Yoga Tantra empowerments.
